martino gamper has curated ‘design is a state of mind’, an exhibition at the serpentine sackler gallery that creates an extensive landscape of shelving systems that span from the 1930s to the present day. offering a survey of historic design classics and one-off pieces, to industrial, utilitarian, contemporary and commissioned work, ‘design is a state of mind’ includes pieces by ercol, gaetano pesce, gio ponti, ettore sottsass and IKEA.

each of the displays is organized in a way that showcases specially selected objects from the personal archive of gamper’s friends and colleagues, alongside an extensive library of contemporary furniture manufacturing catalogues from around the world. on show are collections by: michael anastassiades; sebastian bergne; fabien cappello; jane dillon; adam hills; gemma holt; max lamb; enzo mari; michael marriott; andrew mcdonagh & andreas schmidt; paul neale;  oiva toikka; jerszy seymour and martino gamper himself.
