in london’s white city district, a mobile podcast studio has been conceived by creative agency dn&co and fathom architects as the first nomadic structure of its kind to be available for public use. ‘pod’ can seat up to six people within its 12 square meter space, and hosts a fully functional studio for podcast recordings. on its façade, a print made up of 350,000 ‘pixels’ has been generated from a digital script translation of the first spoken words ever to be transmitted by radio: one, two, three, four. is it snowing where you are mr. thiessen?

fathom architects has designed ‘the pod’ to express inspiration from temporary structures, loudspeakers and the movement of sound. the structure takes the form of a disrupted cube with audio waves emanating from its center, while a circular aperture — referencing a speaker cone — acts as the focal point on three sides of the pod. ‘we wanted to create a striking pavilion which references the current and historical significance of this location in london,’ justin nicholls, founder of fathom architects says. ‘we also wanted to build a place that seemed to ‘appear out of nowhere’, so we worked with box deluxe, a fabrication studio that specializes in building for movies and live events, to build the pod entirely offsite – for it to be installed overnight.’
‘the pod’ is part of an podcast initiative taking place at london’s white city place, where a new series of podcasts curated by dn&co will host a series of discussions on the business value of creativity. the mobile unit allows brands, entrepreneurs and publications to transition into world of audio, with technical support on-hand. ‘with this initiative, we wanted to assert its position as one of london’s most innovative places to do business while nodding to its heritage as the former home of the BBC media village,’ joy nazzari, founder of dn&co explains. ‘podcasts are an increasingly influential medium in the UK, with over 3.5 million users per year and that number set to grow. we want to inspire brands and entrepreneurs to take their first steps into podcasting in a unique, inviting physical environment.’
