traditional patterning meets contemporary printing technology in a six piece rug collection designed by valerio sommella for moooi carpets. sommella’s project began by finding a way to utilize the dutch company’s high-tech capabilities to fabricate the experience of walking on a soft, furry surface.

a range of patterns and images were experimented with, testing various parameters — printing precision, blurring, fiber length and thickness — to find the perfect combination. each final image, most of which are drawn from antiquarian sources, has a fiber density of 500,000 per square meter, and is printed with a resolution of 76dpi. all six pieces — three rugs, three broadlooms — designed by valerio sommella were presented at the moooi exhibition during milan design week 2016.
