tokyo based-studio nendo has created ‘kotoli’ (‘small bird’ in japanese), a picnic set designed for ruinart, the world’s oldest champagne brand. minimal and organic in its appearance, the box looks to offer a new perspective on urban living, offering a mobile sociability that allows people to connect with each other where every they would like. mimicking the way birds sit on a telephone wire, the set aims to capture a sense of whimsy and joy, reinterpreting the way we view the crisscrossing wires that consume every urban center.

composed of stacked and offset boxes, the contemporary cooler provides niche-like compartments that cradle and protect a champagne bottle, cork and two glasses. the tapered flutes – perhaps the defining objects for the set – reference the delicate shape of a small bird, its body slightly angled and tail extending outwards. unable to stand on their own, the glasses rely on the support of the t-shaped handle which intersects with a thin, curved ring. a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the ‘kotoli’ bento box will go towards supporting the reconstruction of japanese cities affected by the earthquake and tsuanmi.
