japanese designer nendo has collaborated with traditional japanese cooper nakagawa mokkougei for the creation of the ‘oke cup’, ‘oke carafe’ and ‘uneven-oke bucket’. the collection of drinking accessories are made from a combination of japanese cypress — the traditional material used for buckets — and jindai cedar — a rare, dark wood — and utilizes the same barrel-making skills and techniques of the woodcrafting brand. the series includes a tumbler, guinomi drinking cup, shot glass, sake cup and sake pitcher. thick wooden walls create nearly impossible spaces between the slats, which are bound with matte-textured metallic hoops. the silhouette of the cups maintains a slight curve at their base, creating a soft feel both visually and in the hand. combining old and new techniques, the set of items brings a contemporary approach to classical japanese materials and industry.
