italian designer giacomo moor presented the limited-edition ‘palafitte’ furniture collection at this year’s collective design fair in new york. the series of products includes a wall-mounted desk, low and high consoles, table and coffee table, a screen, and night stand. all are heavily influenced by the structure of stilt homes, with nods to the natural elegance of flamingos and the oriental world.

as in previous collections, like attraverso and metropolis, giacomo focuses on the boundaries between large and small scales, and the relationship between objects and their environment. for this exploration, he chose a material completely unknown to him, layered bamboo. driven by the lightness and grace of the wood, he embraced the media, eventually reinterpreting it into an artificial material that’s both sturdier and more wear resistant.

with synthetic material in hand, giacomo took to the lathe, reducing the bamboo to its absolute minimum thickness. at certain points, he allows it to swell to mimic the natural material; these are a functional element for reinforcement of joints. brass and sanded glass elements also find a way into the works. the glass dims the transparency, and evokes visual ties to rice paper. brass, on the other hand, is chosen merely as an aesthetic component.
