colorizing istanbul’s waterfront vista during the recent great festival of creativity, london-based designer paul cocksedge‘s ‘palette’ installation celebrates both britain and turkey, their historical connections, trade and culture. the color ratios of each of the national flags fill translucent circles of varying sizes, overlapping and layering in shifting compositions in space.

what I enjoy about ‘palette’ is the way it only comes to life in this setting, when the transparency of the material re-defines and celebrates the landscape beyond it: the trees and plants, the sea, the sky… on its own it is not complete‘, cocksedge describes. the hues of each flag gradually dissolve and fade as they meet in the middle to create a chromatic blend — an entirely new tone made from the constituent parts, which symbolically relates to the collaboration of creativity and artistry between turkey and the UK.
