within office furniture design there is an increasing emphasis on health and well-being. the ‘poster boy’ for this trend is the standing desk. one of the challenges with this typology is the perceived lack of flexibility, both functionally and aesthetically. a company that is trying to challenge this is ‘zestdesk‘.

frustrated with not finding a solution that could accommodate his mobile work, dr. peter moore decided to build his own. together with his son, james moore, and nick roseby D+M, he has designed the world’s first portable and adjustable standing desk.

the furnishing was created for people who hot desk, move to multiple locations, or operate from home. thus, it needed to be adaptable, and ergonomic. once constructed on top of any table, an adjustable monitor platform allows users to change the height of their screens to their preferences. along with these features, the team believed that it was necessary for the product to neatly fold into a carry case for easy transport.

at the beginning on the process, the company explored the potential of plastic framework and, due to strength and stability issues, soon moved towards aluminum. there are considerable stresses when a unit is at full extension and they are proud to have developed a system that can take considerable weight without wobbling. as a result, the structure uses the lightweight metal in the shape of extruded chassis beams, die cast-corners and hinge components, all of which have been anodized. meanwhile, the top surface consists of high grade laminate, a material used in most workplace decor, to ensure that the desk fits into any setting. in all, the furnishing weighs less than 5.5kg (12 lb) making it comfortable to bring anywhere. the project is currently looking for funding on kickstarter here.
