within the historic japanese town of omiya in saitama, where monuments such as the hikawa shrine and bonsai-cho still thrive, prism design has constructed ‘bistro NODE’. the eastern district has always been one of the busiest and most popular areas in the city; it is full of subcultures with clusters of old apartment buildings, cafes, restaurants, all mixed-in with people. more specifically, south ginza street has traditionally consisted open-front shops, but nowadays people require more privacy and exclusivity. in response, the studio states, ‘bistro NODE is a hidden gem that looks to set the standard in such modern trends.’

the design concept follows the connotations associated with the restaurant’s name. a ‘node’ is a place where people gather, where the old and new connect, and in regards to this project, where food and hospitality link together.

located on the first floor of a 40-year-old building building, the designers have opened up the space to bring in the sunlight from the alley. the original cement walls, an antique wooden pillar, and the existing doors have been preserved. various materials, colors, and patterns have been matched to make the seating area warm and inviting.

pendant lights line the expansive countertop that bisects the space into the kitchen and the dining area. multiple blackboard surfaces, placed above the bar, on the walls, and on the façade, are used as tools of communication for the owners to show customers their everyday menu items and specials of the month.
