the ‘ratio coffee brewer‘ brings together hi-tech machinery with natural finishes, offering a design that opposes the planned obsolescence of most common appliances out there today. conceived by james owen, die-cast nickel-plated aluminium contrasts with oregon black walnut and borosilicate glass is hand-assembled to form each appliance, bringing together together the hi-tech with natural finishes. owen was influenced by the manual brewing of pour over kettles in the development of ratio, and has implemented a shower head design that uniformly saturates coffee grounds. hot water is poured over fresh roasted coffee causing a bubbly reaction called a ‘bloom’. the brains within ‘ratio’, applies a cycle that allows the bloom to settle down before delivering the rest of the hot water, resulting in a more evenly extracted grounds and a bolder cup of coffee.

in addition, ‘ratio’ is intuitive and simple in its function. whether you want to make one, or four cups of coffee, the machine determines the amount of water you added to the tank, and adjusts the brewing time accordingly. ‘ratio’ has only one button, subtle white lights on front of machine tell you what is happening with the brew cycle.
