‘STANZE. altre filosofie dell’abitare’ – ‘ROOMS. novel living concepts’

off-site, within the ambit of the XXI triennale international exhibition, the salone del mobile hosts ‘ROOMS. novel living concepts’ — an exhibition curated by beppe finessi, at the palazzo dell’arte in milan from april 2nd to september 12th, 2016. over the last 50 years, there has been little reflection on the profession of interior architecture. expositions such as ‘colours and shapes in today’s home’ at villa olmo, como in 1957; ‘la casa abitata’ at palazzo strozzi, florence, 1965; ‘the domestic project’ at the triennale di milan, 1986; as well as the seminal groundbreaking MoMA exhibition ‘italy. the new domestic landscape’, new york, 1972, expressed that there was no lack of ‘interior environment’ projects. however, the creative discipline has remained a severely undervalued sphere of design over the years, even though it is a prime field of exploration, study and reflection regarding our understanding of how our environment impacts our everyday lives. ‘ROOMS. novel living concepts’ is geared at underlining a particular remit of interior architecture and providing a vision of home living projected towards the future. twenty years since the last triennale, and 30 years since the last great exhibition on interiors, the exhibition invites 11 interior architects and designers — alessandro mendini, andrea anastasio, carlo ratti, duilio forte, elisabetta terragni, fabio novembre, francesco librizzi, lazzarini e pickering, manolo de giorgi, marta laudani and marco romanelli, and umberto riva — to envision domestic spaces that illustrate their own philosophies and concepts of living. the show will be accompanied by a brief historical overview that introduces the subject and places in its historic context through stories, referencing great achievements of past masters for whom interior architecture was their first professional sphere, and a privileged place for their observations on the subject.

the mall porta nuova within the brera design district will be the venue of a brand-new event, conceived in collaboration with MADE expo for milan design week. ‘space&interiors‘ showcases the finest architectural finishes as part of a concept designed to offer visitors a unique, multi-sensory and immersive experience. presented alongside the exhibition ‘new components code’, ‘space&interiors’ is dedicated to architects, designers, local and international buyers interested in the latest trends related to this sector, and will bring together a select group of the most significant products of architectural finishings from a number of companies. curated by migliore+servetto architects, ‘space&interiors’ leverages a new map of living — a manifesto of architecture within which materials and ideas are combined to offer an opportunity to read and interpret the latest movements and progressions in interior design. ‘space&interiors’ explores the narrative interface between a variety of materials offered by a specialized group of companies who manufacture groundbreaking, leading-edge components, including: architectural glass, doors, finishes, floors, gazebos, handles, home entertainment, surfaces, windows and façades etc.

the main expo of ‘space&interiors’ will be accompanied by the presentation of the best projects coming out of the ‘space&interiors’ factory competition. open to students (aged 18-30) enrolled in architecture and design courses at italian universities, it asks young creatives to sum up their interpretation of the topic ‘the codes of contemporary living’ through a brief video and manifesto. they are asked to develop the relationship between finishes and the elements that define the living environment, including a variety of materials — in search for a specific identity. for more information, visit: www.spaceinteriors.it
