for his project smile park, japanese designer sugiX creates sustainable products based on his experiences abroad. manufactured with local knowledge and grass-roots efforts, the objects are produced practically to be affordable and incorporated into a daily routine. drawing from the self-sufficient lifestyles of traditional villages, the ‘kup – eatable cup’ is the latest product for this project.

having visited developing areas in china, laos, and papua new guinea, sugiX draws from the village inhabitants across these countries: specifically how they use ingredients from nature to eat, and create primarily only biodegradable waste. made from rice flour, the kup is an edible disposable cup with a name that combines ‘kuu,’ eat in japanese, and ‘cup’ in english. the kup can be personalized with user’s teeth marks at parties, or eaten as an emergency food.
