launching at IMM cologne, danish lighting brand &tradition has collaborated with design studio SPACE copenhagen to develop ‘the copenhagen pendant’. fusing a mix of classic and modern, maritime and industrial, the low slung matte-lacquered metal lampshade disperses the light in a subtle manner, resembling the classic gaslight feel of the desolate copenhagen piers in denmark.

‘the biggest challenge in designing the copenhagen pendant was to meet our own expectations in making an equally sculptural and functional light,’ explains signe bindslev henriksen, co-founder of SPACE copenhagen. peter bundgaard rützou, the studio’s other co-founder says, ‘the starting point was to create a design which would allow us to mix various metal finishes.’

originally, the pendant was created in one variation, but later expanded into a collection of different sizes, adapting to different spaces, on its own, or in a cluster.  ‘the pendant is widest in the middle and narrows at open top and bottom to ensure that the lamp has a substantial body, while still protecting you from looking directly into the light,’ adds henriksen. ‘the downwards light is even and solid, while the subtle uplight is diffused.’
