for design miami/ basel 2015, studio job has designed two new sculptural pieces of furniture, presented in collaboration with carpenters workshop gallery. the first work is a two meter long table, whose surface is supported by clouds of billowing gold smoke emanating from two collided steam locomotives. named ‘train crash table’, the product is described by designer job smeets as a ‘purely autobiographical’ piece, demonstrating an enormous amount of energy.

named the ‘robber baron buffet’, the second product is an addition to the robber baron suite, originally conceived by studio job in 2006. the existing family of work consists of a cabinet, mantel clock, table, standing lamp, and jewel safe – each offered in a limited edition of five. the highly detailed and crafted pieces reflect the outrageous excesses of america’s 19th century tycoons and russia’s new oligarchs, representing an interior belonging to a powerful industrial leader or their heirs. with clouds of pollution belching from towering smoke stacks, and missiles, falcons, gas masks, warplanes, and wrenches adorning golden surfaces, the collection celebrates and shames both art and industry.
