in time, the natural beauty of an object fades and is replaced by a new set of emotional or aesthetic associations. polished wood becomes chipped and worn, and freshly picked flowers wilt and die. it is this journey from one form to another that studio note attempt to give shape to in its project, ‘crust of the polygon’. each tired item is framed in a delicate polygonal exoskeleton, highlighting the dying object’s persistent — if fading — beauty.

once wood and flowers have completed their stereotypical functions and have dried out or turned to driftwood, studio note’s norihiko terayama tries to capture their charm in a new light by wrapping them in artificial polygons composed of straight lines. creating what the designer calls a ‘new outer skin’, the polygons place the natural forms in contexts of mathematical exactitude, of points and sequences. this new outer layer — or ‘crust’ — casts a fresh perspective on the exhausted item, changing and re-contextualizing its natural shape in a new and modern iteration. with renewed beauty and just a hint of sentimentality, studio note give these forgotten fancies a second lease at life.
