‘extruded clay font’ is an experimental project in materials by ECAL master in product design candidate terkel skou steffensen. the work is focused on the understanding of various types of clay, and how they react during the extrusion process; a low cost, highly efficient manufacturing method often used in brick making. ‘extruded clay font’ began with numbers to be used as house addresses, but eventually transitioned to include the full alphabet as well

each type of class was extruded, very rapidly — around five seconds per meter. from the meter chunk, the length is further cut into desired lengths using a special jig. afterwards, the edges are cleaned with hand tools and fired in the kiln. the project was undertaken during the steffensen’s first year at ECAL, under the direction of alexander taylor.
