with a portfolio that includes a number of gallery projects such as the expansion of the TATE modern in london, the development of the M+ in hong kong, the realization of the parrish art museum in new york, and most recently the opening of the perez art museum miami, herzog & de meuron are well versed in the importance of lighting in the context of exhibiting art and artifacts within the setting of a cultural institution.

this expertise see them collaborating with artemide on ‘unterlinden’, a suspension lamp conceived specifically for museum-use that considers the necessity for a continuous luminous flow of concentrated light; powered by a COB LED that directs controlled brilliance via a high optical efficiency polymeric lens.

presented at the artemide store during milan design week 2014, the die-cast aluminum or brass body of ‘unterlinden’ has a dual function: to dissipate the heat produced by the source; and to direct radiance downwards. to complement the high-efficiency reflector component, the design is finished with an aged appearance on the outside, and a mirror-polished effect on the inside. the overall shape has also been carefully considered in order that the lamp’s form combines the aesthetic glamour of an old-fashioned object, with high technological and light-engineering value.
