carlo moretti has been dedicated to bringing the techniques of glass blowing and associated practices of engaging with the amorphous material to the world. established by brothers carlo and giovanni moretti, the atelier has been working from its murano island location since 1958, creating unique works of art within their furnaces – in collaboration with some of the great masters of the industry – bringing craftsmanship and quality to contemporary italian design.

during milan design week 2014, carlo moretti opens the doors to its new space in via della spiga, 48, which sees the unveiling of a two-level, 130-square-meter venue that incorporates its flagship store with an exhibition showroom. realized as more of a workshop, tapiro studio has envisioned the renovated expanse almost as a recreation of carlo moretti’s venetian store completed by paolo martinuzzi in 1979. light fills the interior through three large windows that face an internal courtyard, opening onto the gallery that features wooden floors, dark walls and iron furnishings, further illuminated by exposed lighting. these dark dramatic elements lend a nice contrast to the transparent pieces on display which showcase a permanent exhibition of objects carefully selected from the company’s collection including pieces from: ‘collezioni d’autore’, ‘calici da collezione’, ‘fondamentali’, ‘rossomoretti’, ‘contemporanei’, ‘cristalli di murano’ and the ‘complementari’ series. alongside these are recent editions such as the uniquely-shaped ‘singleflower’ and ‘troncosfera’ vases, ‘decanter’ and ‘diverse’ lines. from the main showroom, a set of stairs leads visitors down into the showroom which is divided into to two sections: one dedicated to the lighting sector; and the other to lighting contract operations.

to celebrate the opening of the restored milan space, a different interpretation of the limited edition carlo moretti triptych – comprised of three murano glass pieces – is being shown, expressing the history and creativity of the brand in the form of: ‘ovale con piede vase’ (1977), the ‘cartoccio vase’ (1983), and the ‘asimmetrico vase’ (1985). other unmistakable works by carlo moretti that are being highlighted on this special occasion are various versions of vases from the ‘collezioni d’autore’ series (ellisse, fasce riportat, ogiva and sfera), all of which have been numbered and signed.

in addition to the inauguration of carlo moretti’s via della spiga shop, an exposition entitled ‘MONOLITE’ is being exhibited at the tadao ando-designed duvetica store in via santo spirito, 22, dedicated to the man himself who passed in 2008. here glass sculptures from carlo and giovanni moretti’s private archive demonstrate more of the research related to non-traditional glass making processes used in the production of the company’s designs. the works of ‘MONOLITE’ are of substantial presences, measuring between 15 and 50 centimeters high, each being one-of-a-kind as a result of varied combinations of technique, color and forms employed to manufacture them.
