nanocellulose fiberboard is a material developed by multi-disciplinary designer yunting lin that’s 100% recyclable and biodegradable. the sustainable product is designed to replace MDF and molded plastic objects. it’s non-toxicity is thanks to a composition of plant fibers (like flax), and naturally fermented nanocellulose. both are already produced on an industrial scale in europe and east asia. to illustrate the valuable attributes of ‘nanocellulose fiberboard’ he created three potential products: a modular storage system, interior wall panels, and bluetooth speakers.

MDF is a ubiquitous element heavily used in construction and furniture. unfortunately it, as well as similar fiberboards, are neither eco-friendly nor recyclable. they have also been attributed as a possible cause of various cancers and ailments due to their urea-formaldehyde emittance. ‘nanocellulose fiberboard’ can be created at different densities, allowing it to easily substitute its more-damaging counterparts.

the board is manufactured in processes similar to conventional products, meaning it can be produced on existing factory infrastructure. in addition, the ability to control surface colors and patters within manufacturing rids the need for laminating or painting the finished product; drastically reducing labor and time costs.

‘nanocellulose fiberboard’ is highly moldable, and requires less energy than plastic. potentially, it could prove to be the perfect sub-in for product casings on high turnaround consumer electronic products. the material was researched and developed by yunting lin with the help of dr. koon-yang lee.
