zaha hadid: zephyr sofa for cassina

earlier this year during milan design week in april, italian manufacturer cassina presented a prototype of the ‘zephyr sofa’, a seating piece for contract use designed by zaha hadid. the sinuous lines of the sofa seating allow for multiple layouts. here are images of the installation of ‘zephyr’ sofas at the ‘multiplicities’ exhibition in milan. the exhibition was designed by zaha hadid architects, with floor and wall graphics covering the space for a dynamic, immersive experience.

the sofa is drawing on the natural erosion of rock formations as a result of wind. the architect’s design sees a sculpted and carved out shape, which increases ergonomic properties and flexibility, its dynamic sinuous lines allowing for a continuous flow of multiple seating layouts.

‘the resulting formal language gives the ‘zephyr’ increased ergonomic properties without compromising the form’s fluidity or proportion; translating into a concept that allows for multiple seating layouts. the carved profile incorporates deep backrests and generous undercuts for great comfort. a lacquered finish applied to the structural elements underlines every subtle nuance of its composition, and is contrasted by the tactile qualities of its bespoke upholstery and cushioning.‘
