design-aerobics 2008: human needs cycle introduction ...................................................................................................................................................................................
introduction to
the human needs cycle
humans have a number of needs that are instinctoid,
that are innate. these needs are classified as ‘conative
needs,’ ‘cognitive needs’, and ‘aesthetic needs’
including the biological requirements for food, water,
air, and sleep... although all needs are instinctive,
some are more powerful than others.
in life, being transitory, we pass different stages of
personal development.
as mortal entities, there are a series of biologically
and psychologically determined events which are
common to most human lives, and some which are
inevitable for all. the ongoing way in which humans
react to or cope with these events is
‘the human condition’.
we are drawn toward the sense of mystery in life
and the instinctual need of humans to make the most
of their abilities accompany every stage -
motivation, reducing tension and avoiding frustration is
tying along with the growth, happiness and satisfaction
of every person.
shakespeare says in hamlet:
'what a piece of work is a man!
how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculties!
in form and moving, how express and admirable!
in action how like an angel!
in apprehension, how like a god!
the beauty of the world!
the paragon of animals!
and yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?'
we are to undergo four main periods of life,
designboom offers 4 themes, related to the 4
transitional stages of life (which might overlap
or be strictly devided).
what has design to do with the capacity of
humans to exercise introspection and the
willingness to learn more about our fundamental
nature, purpose and essence?
one of the most basic human acts and instincts,
is a main topic of exploration for many talented
people in the creation of artwork... see the lesson list
