the 7th international architecture exhibition is a kind of laboratory of ideas : the urban transformation,
which has taken place over the last ten years has been accompanied by conflicts, by an increase in the
urban population, by old and new forms of poverty, by pollution, waves of imigration, refugees and by
a new culture, in which all the different origins and home countries are mixed together.
what about the increase in information ?
will computer culture bring media and material together, or drive them apart ?
which new theory eschews the dualism between the real and the virtual in favour of a more human
architecture ?
the last decade in architecture has seen the distinction between many theories. we are now moving
towards a new approach: rather than rigid conceptualism, there is the possibility for the integration
of theories that are non-cartesian and non dualist. we are focussing on the elimination of social and
cultural barriers. the complexity of the actual conditions, the acceleration of the processes,
chaos (not disorder but sublime order) and trasgression are the points of departure.
more than 90 installations are shown by famous architects as zaha hadid, hans hollein, arata isozaki,
toyo ito, jean nouvel, gaetano pesce, renzo piano, richard rogers, the virtual dimension was chosen by
most of the younger architects as kas oosterhuis, greg lynn or makoto sei watanabe.
this architectural biennale in venice has also seen numerious contributions by artists, photographers and
writers. the most impressive installation is a huge screen 5 meters high and 2.8 meters wide, illuminated by
39 synchronized slide projectors, which runs along the corderia (ca. 300 meters) : images of 11 metropolises.
digital images, videos, audio fragments, discourses of globalization : the future envisioned is made of
advanced tecnology, ecological materials and organic forms (the french newspaper 'le monde' entitled
their article on the biennale : 'less ethics more aesthetics'). massimiliano fuksias has done a big effort,
this exhibition is really worth seeing it, at least for a view on african, asian and australian scenarios.
