| makoto sei watanabe: the induction cities this "city" is "not designed", this is a city "generated" and "evaluated" by the computer programs. a system with these characteristics is called a "city" here : (1) many kinds of elemental units, some of which can be enumerated; (2) a fairly large number of these units; (3) partial relationships-or interactions- existing among the elements and their definability; (4) and definability of the stage upon which those relations unfold. a city need not to be a "physical entity built on the surface of the earth". whatever conforms to the above-defined characteristics is a city, be that an actual entity, a computer program, or a set of network relationships. it is the extended city.... this is a program for creating a town in which necessary things are located in the necessary places. what geographical relationships should there be for example among schools, houses, game centers and hospitals ? is it possible to obtain an optimal location for the different functions within the city ? |
