'if karim's going to change the world, I aspire to make
it more beautiful and enrich it by offering delicate and
expressive designs.
I offer my work as a stimulant.
a work that is free to challenge the way we occupy space,
as space should conform to the objects we live with
not vice versa.
I would define my style as one that transcends the boundaries
of styles, inspiration is from many places.
currently, my work teeters over the high end.
I am working with both one-off processes as well as with
limited prodution methods. I would like to see some of the
pieces go into large production which would make them
more affordable. I've been extremely fortunate to have
special patrons to commission works that would otherwise
be impossible for me do undertake on my own.
I am a self starter and have self financed all of my
prototypes and molds.
I have complete control and I really love the way that I am
working however I do care when someone really desires
to collect my work and it's outside of their means.
that is my motivation to see myself collaborating
with manufacturers.
I would love to work with some manufacturing process
that are out of my reach- that would be so exciting to
realize some of my ideas that are now on hold.

I am interested to integrate organic form with synthetic
materials. this has been one of my explorations with
materials and processes.
the result appears to denaturalize the organic material.
the combinations of resin encapsulating wood are
seemingly incompatible yet provides a layer like a veil
diffusing the delicate features of a woman's face.
the beauty of this process is that I can reproduce the
same shape in multiples yet each one is distinctively
different due to the nature of the process.

---
with other processes I am working I celebrate the ability to
reproduce exact replicas such as with the molded fiberglass
chaise and chairs. I began with loose sketches and then
directly into sculpting full scale models in foam.
it was important to feel the contours of the form and make
the necessary adjustments by measuring it with my own
body and anyone else I could get who was around to ensure
that the delicate curves were well proportioned.

doug (doug aitken) and I have been together for 8 years.
basically we've grown up together.
we are very independent and both constantly exploring ideas
which we express in our own mediums. '
says elizabeth paige smith, LA designer who is inspired by
surf culture as much as modernist sculpture and architecture.

smith, who has been designing furniture and commercial
interiors for over eight years, was raised in the cayman islands,
moved to the united states to attend the school of fine arts
at kansas university and finally settled in california in 1993.

'red hot nude chair',
the seat is disrupted by a red dot
in the middle – the vinyl seat is
attached with continuous nautical zipper.

'bird', a piece of cabinetry,
was inspired by the enlarged photograph
of a bird. focusing on the complex pores
and bone structure of the bird’s beak,
this furnishing emphasizes texture
while maintaining the organic appeal.
