glen jackson taylor I'm the online art director at lomography.com based in vienna, austria. born in melbourne, australia in 1973, I graduated in industrial design in 1994 and electronic design & interactive media in 1997 from the royal melbourne institute of technology. in melbourne I worked as a freelance web and print designer and taught graphic design part time. I spent 6 months in london woking in print design before moving to vienna to join the lomographic society. --- my present work lomography.com is the website for the lomographic society international which was founded 10 years ago around the cult classic lomo LC-A camera. the site is a picture based communication platform providing members with online photo storage, various community tools to interact and share photos, and traditional information like event listings and local contact points. one of the most unique features is an online photo archive with a searchable database of over 32,000 lomographic photos. the creative studio I work in, hosts a small team of programmers and web designers, as well as an architect, product and fashion designers. this work environment, including the international composition of the team has been very educational, both on a design and on a cultural level. --- design approach the philosophy pursued in the lomography.com project was to keep the site plug-in free and to follow a pure pixel-art approach, particularly relevant when dealing with heavy photographic database driven content. traditionally debates about so called 'good design' on the internet are quickly caught up in dichotomies between style and usability. while always wanting to push the boundaries in interface design and information delivery, I am driven more and more by the desire to develop tools and applications that empower the user to create their own outcomes. the facilitation of DIY design and visual communication is a very exciting challenge, whether that be as simple as providing a platform to share images with friends or the possibility to create a whole website without needing the technical knowledge. --- inspiration I spend a lot of time indulging in popular culture, collecting music, books, watching films, seeing bands, photographing public spaces and generally absorbing the environment around me. travel is a major source of my inspiration. experiencing how people in different countries consume products, entertainment, music and culture has been a valuable input for my work. there are numerous individuals and creative companies in many fields that fuel my ambition to create and find innovative solutions but one of the most motivating factors has been the digital DIY culture of the last decade. I love the possibilities the desktop computer has opened up for us to explore and produce on a level playing field. I find much inspiration in people who are passionate about their work and who are proactive in realising their interests whether that be starting a record label, sewing their own clothes, creating and producing products, putting on an exhibition or even publishing a web site like designboom. I'm very interested in the future of wireless hand held devices and the potential for new applications that utilise the possibility of real time content exchange and play with the GPS functionality. currently I have some projects in development that may form part of a website in the near future but for now, they serve as an outlet to learn new skills which I otherwise would not have exposure to working commercially. I still have strong desire to realise some self initiated projects which may cross over into the world of product design. http://www.lomography.com http://www.default.com.au --- ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? ------- |
