| light accentuates space january 2001 some of the works of torsten neeland combine interior- and lighting design - his feeling for playing with proportions, for space and how to accentuate it - all mark him as one of our nominees for 'designcool'. --- bungalow in muenster - entrance / dining room area - designed in 1999 the light object is connected with a storage unit and separates an open entrance area with a glass front from the kitchen and dining-room area. with this light box it is possible to create different atmospheres through dimming and choosing different colours. for me light has a different effect of how you feel in a space. it is the emotional aspect of my work. --- furniture shop 'ruesing', stilwerk duesseldorf - designed in 2000 the L-shaped groundfloor layout is divided into three narrow corridors and one wide-open area. on entering the shop, one follows a corridor designed to display architectural lighting and desk lamps. light from the lamps reflects against a plain wall, so that each light source can be identified individually. for me, working with light is the most important and most beautiful part of creating atmosphere. --- art gallery 'kunsthaus hamburg' / exhibition 'punch in out' -designed in 1999 the gallery was divided into a 20-metre long corridor and an open plan area to create opposite volumes of spaces. I used indirect flourescent light to separate the walls from the floor, hence producing the illusion of floating walls. --- apartment notting hill / london - designed between 1997 - 1999 the colourful creation of the space was achieved with light and not through paint. I used colour for this space as an option and not as something that is fixed. --- frankfurt fair 'ambiente' / trendshow 'praktisch' - designed in 1997 an exhibition of everyday objects and tools. I wanted to create a space where the amount of objects are in balance with the space. all the objects were displayed in an iluminated rotunda. indirect light separates the display body from the ground. I believe that creating space with light always has an irrational impact, because you can control the effect of light only to a certain extent. I see this part of work as an experiment. --- torsten neeland, born 1963 in hamburg, germany, studied industrial design at the college of fine art in hamburg. he has lived and worked as an industrial and interior designer in london since 1997. among his clients are anta, authentics, babylon, donna karan home, montina, dornbracht, rosenthal, wmf. honours/collections/exhibitions: 2000 - the designs of the work station for the london apartment and the 'carte blanche' breakfast set for babylon are part of the collection of the victoria and albert museum. 1999 - 'it is what it is', a furniture show with gioia meller marcovicz during 100% design in london 1999 - 'design plus' prize for the design of a pencil sharpener 1995 - 'karl schneieder preis' for design http://www.torsten-neeland.co.uk |
