satyendra pakhale
indian born designer (december 1967)

---
may 2001

pakhalé's work could be described as symbolic, warm,
personal and his objects have energetic physical presence
halfway between soft and hard, between flesh and object,
between craft and industry.
he seems to be mindful with a thought of how to create
contemporary objects which seamlessly blend old & new,
artisan & highly industrialised.
to his designs he adds spiritual perspectives, a diversity
of strong cultural influence, particularly relevant in today's
multicultural society.

recently, he discovered or rather rediscovered bell metal-
the age old process of 'cire perdue' practiced in the centraliIndia
for several hundreds of years.
'now I am working on a bell metal chair and it looks simple
but actually when it comes to make it is such a challenge -
an absolute sublimation of craft and industry.
this combination of handicrafts along with industrial production
is what I am interested in.' he says.

pakhalé completed his studies at the industrial design center in
bombay and at the french institute of design in paris.
from 1995-98 he was senior product designer at 'new business
creation', philips design, netherlands.

satyendra established his atelier in amsterdam in 1998.
his recent collaboration includes :
alessi (italy) , cappellini (italy), magis (italy), habitat (uk),
mexx international (nl), totem (new york), zeritalia (italy).
