| a marcel wanders' project created for the homeless people. october 2001 --- ![]() 'home is where most of memories are'. this little phrase written of the can of gold is a citation of the 72 old josef from czech republic. what does it mean 'home', for those who have not a roof above the head? that marcel wanders chooses to deal with this matter illustrates how he handles with design in order to awake associations and to tell stories. my name is anne-marie siegel, I'm a french woman running a small gallery for design in hamburg where we show mainly works of young designers. this story all started in hamburg a few months ago, when our gallery asked marcel wanders if he could create a special object for its first birthday, what he kindly did. an ordinary soup can transformed to a vase, edited to 100 pieces - after having been emptied (and the chicken soup brought to the homeless) has been gold-plated with 24 carats, sticked on with a beautiful label, numbered and signed by marcel, and offered to purchase. sold to the price of euro ¤ 250, of which 80 % goes to the homeless association 'the mission', a few blocks off the gallery. the sale of 'can of gold' will allow about 12.000 more soups to be distributed in the coming winter. marcel wanders, normally dedicated to design interiors, like the one he did for the vip lounge in dutch pavillion at expo 2000, intends to bring with this project his contribution to the wellfare of people withouth the self-evident blessing of a house, what he otherwise could not achieve. he now wants to extend his project to other cities in the world where the design community is willing to improve the condition of the homeless. this is the pilot-project, every following edition will have its own label, typical shape and will be part of a growing series of precious containers, a 'collector´s item. 'connecting all people around us, excluding no one and make feel we are united', as marcel wanders expresses it. here it is now the little shiny golden vase, empty but full of our stories and enthousiasm, wrinkled but beautiful for those willing to see. I think it would be great if designboom contributes to the action by reporting in its columns about the project so that it finds echo everywhere in the world. it would help a lot !
