using light, each designer explores and highlights the many
characteristics of Corian® by creating an interactive ‘mini-architecture’
that pushes the material to a new level -
the exhibition showcased a hitherto little explored
characteristic of DuPont(tm) Corian(R) - translucency !
and its many other innovative qualities: its formability !
thesplendour and purity of its colours !
its tactile quality !
the way it combines with other materials !
and its ability to create monolithic designs !
this theme has been developed in association with artemide
(james irvine), luceplan (ross lovegrove) and flos (marc newson).

a vitamin circular bar with seating all the way round.
the design allows the barman to serve and interact with all his
customers. the entire installation is made in Corian® cameo white
and in custom-colour grey-beige – but the real drama comes from
the way the design is illuminated.
lights from the floor, around the perimeter of the stools and through
the centre of the bar all change colour in unison, so that the whole
mood of the environment can be transformed in an instant.
'I have been working with Corian® for many years.
I wanted to exaggerate the monumental possibilities of this
wonderful material. I wanted to do something 'big' and also 'sociable'.
as a boy, my mother would drag me around museums and I
remember desperately looking for a bench to sit on while she was
admiring some painting...' he said.

lovegrove’s floor is designed to make us look at Corian®
from a completely different perspective, and to show
that its use in flooring can be highly creative.
the organic design is reminiscent of a canyon, burrowed
down to reveal layer upon layer of carved Corian®.
lit from beneath, the floor is covered in transparent
plexi-glass to allow visitors to walk over the design,
and view it from a unique angle.
the Corian® layers are (from top) glacier white, adobe,
custom colour bright yellow, turkish blue, tea rose and
mandarin.
'there is a new potential emerging in the field of spacial
definition made possible by the use of numerically controlled
data to cut complex forms from a surface material.
in my installation 'the land of lu' there's no real answer or
deeper message in it. it could just be my subconscious
looking for some sort of outlet after all the exposure I have
had recently to new ways of thinking, new people and
new situations, and the contemplation of the convergence
of it all and the adventure I know it will bring.' he said

he has created a ‘forest’ of 16 diode lamps that range in
height up to 180 cm, putting the illluminated Corian® heads
at eye-level, and allowing visitors to examine these shimmering
sculptures at close range.
created in Corian® cameo white, mandarin and sun, the diode
lamps are midway between a design installation and a product,
and demonstrate that Corian® can be combined with light to create
something both artistic and commercial.
'not what you would expect, but an interesting and seductive
quality that has been discovered.' he said
