d[x]i

- free of charge design magazine -

who said that the (design) print medium is dying?
well it's true, the print market is dominated by a handful of
megacorporations, but there are also a few new independent
magazines :
the spanish fanzine d[x]i is a pleasure to look at,
hold and read, that it restored my faith that one day little gems like
this may become the norm rather than the very rare exception.

designboom met the team.

---
a different way of making a magazine
'experimentation, creativity, interaction, ...freedom
are truly affecting the world of design.
these concepts also motivate us to create a new media.
today the decay of these values is a serious problem
and it is very important that we make the general public aware of the
value of design, and it is only as an orchestrated group of designers,
(and not journalists) that we can do this.
we spend a lot of time working on the magazine, and feel that
sharing our resources with you would be the best way to foster an
knowledge and understanding of this exciting field. '
---
'well it's pretty the same with designboom, isn't it?'

---
free of charge
- thanks to advertisers who want to reach different kinds of people?
'well' the concept is too good to be true :
at the moment we only cover costs by charging advertisers for
exposure. but we have the talent, we have the skills,
what we need now is the will to bury the traditional ways in which
we have operated, and to reinvent ourselves and reestablish our
professional values. beyond all this is the further challenge to take
control of the project by becoming more entrepreneurial and instead
of giving our ideas away for the financial benefit of others,
to retain control and ownership of what we do and exploit
and earn from it directly.'

---
no glossy pages, you go for an opaque newspaper.
'the two primary components to the design - concept and content -
each demanded a lot of physical and conceptual space
in order to properly communicate. we are ignoring the hygiene of
elegant typography and relying instead on the raw energy of concept.'

---
distribution?
'the d[x]i magazine is distributed in design & art schools,
museums and galleries, restaurants and coffee-bars,
fashion / design stores, bookshops, libraries and other
design related institutions all over spain.
in addition to this, the magazine is sent to a few
subscribers around the world.'

---
who is behind d[x]i ?
'the idea was born in 2000,
by a small group of students from UPV
(universidad politécnica de valencia).
the project is sponsored by public and private companies.
today a wide variety of people is working for d[x]i
including students, professional designers, artists, architects,
sociologists, etc.'
