patrick everaert / tuer le temps

april 25 – june 9, 2002
B.P.S. 22 (bâtiment provincial solvay) , charleroi, belgium

---
the plastic arts section of the province de hainaut in belgium
has organised artist patrick everaert’s first big monographic
exhibition with about forty photographs.
everaert has created photographs printed with what
could be termed a 'disturbing strangeness',
to use a freudian expression also often applied to
surrealist inspired works.
his pictures, taken from magazines and computer
processed afterwards, seem to materialise visual
impossibilities which would have been familiar to
rené magritte.
however, he doesn’t give in to the
brutality of 'fragment and chock aesthetics'
peculiar to collage and photomontage, for
which magritte may seem to be the creator,
because he uses emotional and provocative overstatement
made possible by the new technologies for processing
digital pictures.
---
patrick everaert’s works are truly a form of 'eye exercise',
as opposed to the sensationalism in advertising.
The familiar components in
his pictures do not lend themselves to being read
directly and require decoding, going
far beyond being an 'immediately'
consumable photograph.
open to all possible interpretations
- none is a priori false -
his works pave the way for reflection,
both poetical and critical, about our world with its
abundance of images.
---
patrick everaert is far more established abroad
than in his country of origin (born in charleroi,
belgium in 1962).
his work has been exhibited in several galleries in
paris (météo, brownstone - corréard)
and he was invited by the 'centre national de
photographie' to participate to the paris
'biennale de l’image' in 1998, which introduced
him to an international artistic audience.
he was chosen to represent the belgian french-speaking
community, and participated 'a latere' at palazzo
francetti in the venice biennial 2001.

patrick and his wife alix everaert are
good friends of designboom.
the everaerts are collectors and experts in design
of the 60's and 70's, and own a private
collection of design objects with about 1500 pieces.
their passion for design has led them to create
the very useful resource site 'design addict' in 1997.
