- non commissioned public furniture -

concrete that soothes you
something recently appeared on the banks of the
east river waterfront in williamsburg, brooklyn.
six cast concrete chairs had surfaced without
explanation, only having printed on them
'sub t non-commissioned public furniture'.

this was the brainchild of tobias reischle,
an industrial designer by trade as well as brooklyn
resident.
the inspiration to create public use furniture was
a simple one. reischle often found himself on the
waterfront with no place to sit except on abandoned
piers which could prove dangerous, sitting on the
ground, or bringing his own camping chairs like
so many other visitors.

reischle decided to cast the chairs and donate them
at his own expense to provide seating that could
be enjoyed and engaged for use at the waterfront
as well as other undeveloped park areas throughout
the city.

the chairs designed specifically for waterfront
perching are unconventional in appearance;
with their low-seating height that evokes a
lounge-like sensation for its occupant.
the chairs are not only a welcome addition to the
waterfront; their theft-proof weight of 200 lbs.
each practically makes them a staple.

community feedback via e-mail has been overwhelmingly
positive. future plans include producing additional chairs
for placement throughout the city’s recreational areas.
