2002 saatchi & saatchi innovation in communication award
---
THE NEXT BIG ONE

---
look around you. what do you see?
what in our everyday life was created to provide us with a better quality of life?
where does the inspiration for these ideas come from?
the whale for example had been roaming the waters of our planet centuries
before man finally stumbled across sonar technology.
and it has often been the case where man has drawn on nature’s very own
inspiration to improve on his own existence.
---
kaspa system
to this end, the first winner of the saatchi & saatchi nnovation in communication award
was leslie kay, awarded for his kaspa system.
the kaspa system uses sonar in the same way that bats use sonar to navigate.
it acts as a vision substitute for use by the blind and visually impaired.
where in the past the blind were confined to a sightless existence, the
kaspa system now enables them to 'see with sound'.
---
the question now is, 'on who, where or what will we be drawing our
inspiration from next'?
---
the 2002 saatchi & saatchi innovation in communication award
is seeking outstanding thinkers whose world-class innovations have the
potential to change the world as we know it.
this international competition offers a US$ 100,000 grand prize pool to help
innovators take their winning idea from prototype or compelling concept,
to practical reality.

the idea that wins the grand prize may be technological, linguistic, digital
or manual. in whatever form it takes, an international panel of judges will
select the innovation that has the greatest potential to improve or make
possible communication between individuals, between individuals and their
environment, between companies and customers; performers and audiences;
between nations or even, planets.

since 1996, the innovation in communication awards program has recognised
over 25 world-class thinkers whose ideas range from self-adjusting spectacles
and new age rosetta stones to wall-sized LCD building blocks and technology
that brings the sense of smell to the worldwide web.
the 2000 winning idea, a malleable, pressure-sensitive conductive compound is
now being used to provide NASA robots with the electronic equivalent of human skin.
