CDA 2002

the contemporary design and
decorative arts
selling exhibition at sotheby's

february 20, 2002 – march 1, 2002
sotheby's, london, uk

this marks the sixth year that sotheby's has given over its
galleries, which are traditionally quiet in the first few weeks
of the year before the spring rush of auctions,
to a selling exhibition of contemporary decorative arts and design
- now officially known as CDA.

CDA is curated by rachel barraclough who has pulled
together the work of young designers from all over europe to
produce an exhibition as varied in tipologies as it is in poetics.

furniture design:
polish designer dorota koziara’s bold 3m high throne-like
chairs are made of gathered dried branches which result in
towering, gracious, dancing forms entitled' twelve angels'.
those chairs made from rescued tree branches,
when seen from a distance have the appearance more of
being made from hair than from wood.

designer alexander taylor has come up with something
in the form of a sliced shelving system, table and seat
made from acrylic-based materials.

other furniture designers include christophe delcourt,
matt sindell and abdi, norwaysays, kazuhiro yamanaka,
david langburn and stephen richards...

each year the focus of CDA changes, depending on which
disciplines are producing the most innovative designs.
this year, sotheby's has discovered a highly-creative number
of glass, silver, metalwork and textiles designers,
some only recently out of college.
among many products:
a series of decorative vessels made of hundreds
of tiny folds of linen cloth sewn together with wisps of
transparent threads by laura callinan.
a fun product, the ‘mickey mouse’ glass jugs by takahide sano.
the silver and bronze vessels by junko mori appear as mini
explosions.
