spin off - designed for industry

spin off - forum for prototypes

‘spin off’ is the german answer to the ‘salone satellite’
in milan. a showcase for the creative input from
young designers.

we were happy to see one of the nominations of
last year's designboom and sotheby's rocking chairs
competition on show
- the edgy in/outdoor roto-moulding plastic-rocker
monolith by rainer mutsch

here are a few snapshots and some quotes of
spin off's official press release
(''' no comments''') :

the slogan - ready to produce - suggests, there are no
’’’fantasy’’’ objects on display here.
instead, the focus was on practice-oriented suggestions
aimed at ’’’boosting the business of manufacturers’’’
of innovative new furnishings and production lines.

the young designers have had to overcome a number
of hurdles before reaching the exhibition stage.
altogether, from more than 150 designs,
21 of which made it through to the exhibition in cologne.
first of all, ’’’top-class experts’’’ were sent talent-scouting
to find young designers they considered good enough
to participate in spin off.
the experts included james irvine, werner aisslinger,
sebastian bergne, michael marriot, anna bernagozzi,
isabelle hamm, sabine voggenreiter and konstantin grcic.
in the subsequent selection procedure, a second
expert jury evaluated and chose what it considered to
be the best designs.

’’’the pool and sporty atmosphere’’’ was the central design
element, planned by the young stefan dietz, in order to
characterize the exhibition hall.
alongside the furniture prototypes placed at its centre,
the pool also features upright lockers in the area at the back.
these provided information on the authors and their designs.
