the exhibition devoted to finnish architect (1898-1976)
alvar aalto, one of modernism's great hero's, is curated
by shigeru ban and tomoko sato, in collaboration with
architect juhani pallasmaa. organised by barbican art
gallery in conjunction with the alvar aalto museum in
jyväskylä, finland.
the alvar aalto museum has lent 46 original architectural
drawings, over 2000 photographs and 75 objects.
the exhibition examines the development of aalto’s
architectural and design work, featuring also models,
drawings, photographs and artefacts from 14 of his
key architectural projects, built mainly in finland, denmark
and across scandinavia - spanning six decades.

interiors and furniture
alvar aalto was as concerned with the interiors of his
buildings as he was with the structure, and the exhibition
also showcases his wide-ranging product designs.
the design of artefacts took on a fairly important role in his
practise. amongst the design products are some more
rarely seen aalto pieces, but there are classics too.
objects on show include furniture, as well as glassware,
light fittings and textiles, many of which continue to be
manufactured today by the renowned finnish design
company artek, founded by alvar aalto and his wife aino
aalto in 1935.
according to alvar aalto's design principles, the interior
design and furnishings had to be in harmony with the
architectural style of the building.
his modern furniture is essentially linked with inventions
about the bending of wood. he was granted patents on
several of these inventions in a number of different
countries in the 1930s 40s and 50s.
