SDR-4X II
one need never feel lonely again - this baby can sing,
dance and, with 60,000 words stored in his memory,
should always be able to offer you some witty after-dinner
repartee. the human shaped robot, is no gimmick...
inside its 23 inch frame are some very advanced electronics,
enabling the robot to recognise faces, voices and names,
as well as holding conversations with its human counterparts
and picking itself up when it's pushed over.
the model also comes equipped with two cameras in its
eye sockets, allowing it to dodge obstacles and recognise colours.
its hearing is equally as impressive - microphones in the robot's
head allow it to pinpoint the location of different sounds and turn
its head accordingly, and it can also recognise different people
by the tone of their voices. the SDR-4XII has been exhibited at
robodex 2003. aibo's 58-cm brother was the most technically
impressive of the bipedal robots at the show,
it was displaying fluid walking motion and lifelike gestures.

news, medical information, and encouraging messages to

wakamaru
is one-meter high and has a round head.
it can monitor your home, talk with you and follow
your conversation. wakamaru was originally a name given
to boys of a samurai class before they were old enough
to have adult names.
the name could now take on a whole new meaning in japan,
where birth rates have fallen to the point that the japanese
fear there won't be enough people to take care of the
country's elderly.
mitsubishi heavy industries plans to release wakamaru
sometime next year, and its primary goal is to provide
companionship …
its frame contains an integrated cell phone that is
programmed to call emergency dispatchers automatically if
a problem occurs with a patient. an embedded web camera
lets doctors and family members keep an eye on the patient
at all times. speech-recognition software and a built-in
dictionary provide the robot's vocabulary.
wakamaru can either have a male or female voice.

technology development organization (NEDO).
the total robotic system was designed and integrated by
kawada industries, inc. together with humanoid research
group of national institute of advanced industrial
science and technology (AIST).
