nine topics including the ten years at the workshop
of le corbusier, work in japan, the university pavilions,
the ski resorts of les arcs, the unesco tea house in 1993
... a chronological look at the designer's career
and her search for an 'art of living '.

charlotte perriand
was born in paris in 1903. she studied at the school of the
central union of decorative arts under the direction of the
french decorator henri rapin and she followed the courses
of maurice dufrêne, the art director of the lafayette galleries.
in 1927, charlotte perriand exposed a ‘bar under the roof’
made out of steel and aluminium at the ‘salon d'automne’.
then le corbusier invited her to his workshop.
the following year she gained success with her ‘dining room’
with extensible table and swivel chairs, presented at the
‘show of the artists decorators’.
having corbusier and his cousin pierre jeanneret as a partner,
charlotte was responsible for ‘the racks, the chairs and the tables’
as well as the interior installations related to architecture.
their interior equipment and pieces as ‘chaise longue’, 'grand confort',
‘swivel chair’, tables with flagstone of glass, beds and racks
were exposed at the ‘salon d’automne’, 1929.
charlotte used 'new' materials resulting from the car and aeronautical
industies. the use of chrome tubes in furniture has started a new
spirit in europe. in 1937 charlotte perriand left the workshop
of le corbusier and turned her attention to more traditional materials
and organic forms. perriand worked in japan and indo-china,
and in 1949 she returned to france at the request of le corbusier.
she died in october 27, 1999 in paris.
