having acquired a large and significant group of plans, drawings
and models by aldo rossi in the early 1980s,
the deutsches architektur museum holds one of
the most important collections of this architect’s oeuvre.

the estate of aldo rossi (1931-1997) is scattered among the
world’s great architectural collections
(including the centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee
in rome, the getty research institute in los angeles and the
canadian centre for architecture in montreal).
with this exhibition, the DAM hopes to contribute towards a
fuller understanding of the oeuvre of this leading italian architect
of the late twentieth century.
though the exhibition did not actually bring together the various
collections, it represented them in a comprehensive survey
of his work.

the documents cover the period from 1965 to 1986, which was the
most important period in rossi’s oeuvre. apart from his apartment and
office buildings on wilhelmstrasse in berlin for the 1981 IBA,
they show only his italian projects.
the exhibition presented his drawings and models as well as his
fascinating sketchbooks, which not only provide a telling and detailed
insight into the design process, but are in themselves extraordinary
examples of fine draughtsmanship. while the focus was on his most
important project, the cemetary of san cataldo in modena,
the exhibition also featured his designs for city halls, schools and
apartment buildings.

aldo rossi
was born in milan, italy in 1931.
he graduated from the milan politecnico in 1959 and joined the
milanese magazine casabella-continuita, serving as its editor from 1961 to 1964.
he established himself as an architectural theorist in 1966 with the publication
of his theoretical treatise ' l'architettura della citta'.
he was awarded with the pritzker architecture prize in 1990.
at the ceremony he said:
'I'd like to speak about something like a contamination between different
cultures. we live in a time similar to the period of palladio,
when the architecture of this city, of this country, made a special contamination
in russia, in england, and in america. every building is the same,
but at the same time, it is very different. for this reason, I believe in a great
civic architecture that has the capacity to recompose our cities,
making our lives more free, more visible, more beautiful.'
aldo rossi died in 1997.
