royal museums of art and history/ musée du cinquantenaire brussels, belgium until 27/02/2005 http://www.kmkg-mrah.be/fr/divers/tattoofr.html following a boom in tattoos, the royal museum of art and history in brussels set up an ambitious exposition on the history of tattoos: tatu - tattoo explores the evolution of the phenomenon. twelve themes are explored, underlining the diversity in style and meaning, the artistic aspects and the social implications of body art - from the tattoo as a sign of the outcast to the place of tattooing in japanese culture and more contemporary designs. the exposition shows the history as well as the technique of how the colorful japanese decoration of the human body was applied through the ages. the visitor can easily detect the remarkable resemblances between a small decorated neolithic figure dating back to 3-2 millenium B.C.t of the romanian tripolje culture standing next to a dogu statue from the jomon era. the line motif on the latter might be early proof of how the ainu people put on tattoos. around 300 objects (sculptures, photos, engravings,...) are on show. on display as well are japanese ukiyo-e printmaker utagawa kuniyoshi's (1798-1861) original woodcuts from the series 'one hundred and eight heroes from suikoden' (1827), a cycle of stories about a notorious gang of twelfth-century chinese bandits, tattooed, belonging to the museum's collection. because of their fragility they can be on show only for a short period of time. they are not shown all at a time but are replaced regularly in order to guard them from light. the show runs until the end of february, and is worth a visit even if you do not plan to be tattooed. --- see a brief history of tattoos --- see furniture design tattoo --- ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? ------- |
