words create light
tradition tells us that words, not light, came first,
out of the primordial darkness (st. john summed it up in
one famous line: 'in the beginning was the word').
but without doubt, one of the greatest influences upon human
society is the invention of lighting in all it’s various forms.
lights have allowed people to extend their work and social
hours as well as create safer environments in which to live.
the mesopotamian who wished to continue his reading
when night had fallen; the roman who intended to pursue
his studious documents after dinner,
the monk wrote in his cell and the scholar in his study,
for the sake of the words they sought to read,
the light that would illuminate their search.

although thomas alva edison (1847–1931) did not invent the
electric filament lamp, he did however turn theory into
practicable form and was one of the first to successfully market
incandescent lighting.
in 1879 he created the carbon filament lamp, housed in a glass vacuum bulb
- a small electric light suitable for home use.
we still had many years to wait until electricity became widely available.
