designer's comment:
Happy Plant is an interacting plant-pot.
The idea is based on the fact that plants are living things and they have needs like the human and animals.
The difference is that they can not tell these directly. The project takes the very basic need of a plant. It is water.
Water is a good electric conductor especially when it is used with dissolvent substances which already exist in the soil.
The circuit which controls the system is a very cheap and simple device. It calculates the electric current
between two electrodes which are inserted in the soil. When the current falls down to a certain level,
the circuit lights two white-light emitting LEDs. If the current falls to a critical level the LEDs start to fade out.
These effects symbolies the needs of the plant and makes the plant communicate artificially.
The plant tries to receive attention by showing itself.
LEDs consume the energy very efficiently. This allows the system to work with two AA size batteries.
When the batteries are weak, the LEDs will blink to tell,"change the batteries".
The idea of the project is not the form but the communication of the need of water, which can be demonstrated on any form.
