| paris, 54 rue du faubourg-saint-honore 'red is the new black' pimento red for the ultra-long acrylic counter that runs against shiny scarlet fiberglass walls. 'red is as strong as black,' rei kawakubo says, 'black is no longer strong and has become harder to use. red looks most beautiful in fiberglass. making a shop is like making clothes: you need to excite and energize people. there has to be the same shock and sense of surprise.' chili-pepper red for the 'chill out' zone - an empty box of a room where red cube seats glide by remote control across the floor. rei kawakubo told us only <we want the shop to express our spirit>, but at the time, she was fascinated by the word 'mechanic,' so we took that as our base and added a 'kinetic' element, which is the motif that runs through our work, to give rise to this space. the red fiberglass box moving around within the space could well be described as a 'dancing cube' says abe rogers.
