yugo nakamura

- may 2001 -

is one of the most interesting talents of today's digital design field.
his work is based on a constant research in the interface
enviroment. in july 2000 he presented his work to huge acclaim
at flashforward2000 in nyc.
nakamura studied engineering, architecture and landscape
design. after graduating he worked as an engineer specialising
in bridge design.
he now works in interface design with 'business architects inc.'
in tokyo and during his personal time he's involved with
'MONO*crafts'.
he has also been active with projects like 'gasbook'
and 'the remedi project'.

have you been influenced by other designers ?
'it was through a collection of works of great artists
and designers such as john maeda, tomato and
dextro that I chanced upon the pure enviroment
within the machine in front of me, the computer.'
the first time I encountered interface design was
at an exhibition I went to with a friend, where I came
across the work of john maeda, from MIT -
I first learned the meaning of 'interactive' from his works.
I don't know whether I learned directly from him or not.
but I suppose up until seeing john maeda's work I thought
computer graphics simply meant creating pretty pictures
using illustrator or photoshop.
but what I saw in maeda's work was very different.
he was attempting to create something for the computer,
not with the computer.
it was about making something more natural to the computer's
environment. it's about adapting to a world of calculations
running on a massive scale.
I think I did learn what it might mean to express something
from within the computer's own environment.
that was the basic paradigm I learned from john maeda-san.
sensorium.org was another site that brought to me a net
enviroment completely unique to any I had imagined before.

what is your aim with MONO*crafts?
'the current monocrafts site is, well, let's be honest,
it's a million miles from the ideas of someone like
jakob nielsen say, about usability.
see http://www.useit.com
I can tell you, at least once every couple of days,
I get mail saying 'this site is so user unfriendly!'
or 'I've never seen such an unnavigable site' and sure,
I completely agree!
the techniques we're trying out at the moment,
they're just not mature yet.

there's usability... but there's also joy ...
there's that simple fun of being able to touch and feel,
that can draw you deeper into a web experience.

'the things I see are determined by the relationship,
interaction, between me and the enviroment that
I'm part of. …
I believe that the perception, that any given person has
of the web enviroment is dictated by what they have
already encountered there. …

I think that one of the key features of the web enviroment
is that it in a constant state of flux; it evolves from moment
to moment, according to the user's intentional browsing
activities, and the accidental discoveries she makes on the way. …
I am not particularly interested in using flash to create cool
motion graphics.
what I do want to create is a unique communication
experience, or interface enviroment, a reactive field.
MONO*crafts was my attempt to fuse diverse elements
organically into a single interface world.'

yugo nakamura is one of the authors of a fantastic
tutorial book:
'new masters of flash', edited by friends of ED.
designboom tested it, check it out.

---
what has ben your contribute to 'new masters of flash' ?
'in 'new masters of flash' I wanted to give some idea of the
spirit of the way in which I actually create my work.
the example I used is the movie 'nervous matrix' which
was the initial screen of MONO*crafts.
a 3x3 matrix is mapped over leonardo da vinci's mona lisa.
by pressing one of the keys mona lisa's face is distorted
in real time.
the cells do not move independently but interfere with
each other, repeatedly fluctuating between expansion
and contraction, so that the proportions of the matrix vary
in an infinite pattern depending on the timing with which
the numeric keys are pressed.
my aim here has been to give you all the basic script that
you need to create a similar effect of your own.'
