| william klein / old and new york galleria carla sozzani, milan 9 november - 17 dicember 2000 http://www.galleriacarlasozzani.com most of the photos of the milanese exhibition were from 1954-55, shot by Klein for his celebrated series 'new york'/ 'life is good and good for you in new york' for which he won the 'prix nadar' in 1956. although among klein's very first photographs, they became a remarkable 'cause celebre'. klein revisited new york in 1954 and began his documentation of the city, hurling himself into the urban chaos. he worked in direct opposition to the model of elegance and discretion he saw in the images of henri cartier-bresson. an iconoclastic and explosive vision enabled him to seize the crazy chaos of a big city, breaking all the rules of conventional photography in the process. klein went after the urban crowd with a wide angle lens, with confrontational close-ups, instinctive grab shots, sharp contrasts and harsh printing methods. part fond family album about his native new york, part furious satire on the city. when published in paris they struck dissonant chords with the anecdotal and poetic strains of the prominent european photographers of the time. when italian film director federico fellini saw it, he offered klein a position as his assistant on a film. 'there are a lot of things happening in my work. I have this sense of tragic absurdity with a sort of black jewish humor mixed with my own graphic sense.' he says. see ----
