raymond loewy biography


raymond loewy (1893-1986)
has been called 'the man who shaped america,'
his redesigns helped to 'streamline the sales curve'.
loewy’s long and prolific career spanned nearly 60 years.

loewy was born in paris in 1893, where he was educated
and received a degree in engineering.
1914-1918 served in the french army, corps of engineers.
he emigrated to the us in 1919 (1938 became a u.s. citizen)
to pursue a career in graphic design, and, for most of his
life he maintained houses in both countries.

his first jobs were window dressing for macy's and saks
fifth avenue. loewy moved on and made a successful
career as an illustrator for vogue, harper's bazaar,
wanamaker's, saks and bonwit teller.
it was not until 1929 that loewy received his first major
commission with the redesign of the gestetner duplicating
machine. he established his own firm in 1930 and in 1944
he formed raymond loewy associates with five partners.

during his lifetime loewy's company worked for numerous
private companies as well as governments, and his designs
have had a major effect on the man-made environment.
products he has been responsible for range from cars,
ships, aeroplanes, buildings and white-goods appliances
to products such as toothbrushes and pens.
served as consultant to numerous corporations including
hupp motor company, coca cola, united airlines, shell,
exxon, IBM, BMW, GM and NASA sought him for his
streamlined designs seen to reflect economy and grace.
consultant, national eeronautics and space administration
on appollo application program, and on saturn I, saturn V,
and skylab hability studies, 1967-1973.

among his numerous honours and awards
- from the gold medal, in transportation (for GG-1 locomotive
design), international exposition, paris 1937;
royal designer for industry, royal society of arts, london, 1937;
to the award from the president of france, 1980 /
became honorary citizen of france -
he was named one of the 100 'most influential americans
of the 20th century' by life magazine and
one of the 'thousand makers of the 20th century' by the
sunday times.

he was founding member and fellow of the
american society of industrial designs (president 1946).

loewy published his autobiography
'never leave well enough alone' in 1951,
and authored 'industrial design' in 1979.
