when mies van der rohe emigrated to the united
states in 1938, he was past 50, and had already
had a prestigious career in europe. the american
midwest, with its desire to modernize,
was quite a striking contrast from the oppressive,
limiting atmosphere of germany during those years.
as he became immersed in the academic, social,
economic, industrial, technological and urban
milieu of america, mies’ work was transformed.
at the same time he transformed the face of that
country by finding the perfect balance between
concrete american pragmatism and his european
visionary aspirations.

the well-documented and beautifully illustrated
catalogue ‘mies van der rohe in america’,
shows documents from the itinerant exhibition
of the same name.
for the first time mies’ work in america
has been thoroughly re-examined,
thanks to much previously unpublished material
and extensive interviews with those who
collaborated with him.
the result is a new vision of this profound thinker,
inspired artist and visionary architect, tracing his
underlying ambitions and philosophy through
his designs for america.
