george nakashima,
japanese-american woodworker was internationally
known for his innovative furniture designs as well as his
meditative architectural interiors.
nakashima’s distinct woodworking style,
characterized by slabs of free-edged wood,
is evident in his high quality tables, chairs, cabinets
and accessories.
no two pieces are alike. each furniture design is
adjusted to the natural features of the wood,
so the design features the wood,
not the other way around.
the natural, free-form contours of nakashima's tables
are a complement to frank lloyd wright's organic
architecture...

peace tables
---
it was george nakashima's dream to establish
peace altars on each continent of the world as
a tangible symbol of man's desire to achieve a
more peaceful environment.
the first peace altar was dedicated at the cathedral of
st. john the divine in new york city on new year's eve,
1986.
nakashima had intended a second table for russia since
1984, but only in june 2001 it could be placed in the
russian academy of arts in moscow.
(made from the same monumental black walnut tree as
the first.)
the third nakashima peace table was destined for
auroville, india in february 1996.
george nakashima believed that through the gifting
of concrete symbols of peace-tables formed by nature,
aspiring to the divine, worked by human hands and
consecrated to peace, universal peace might some day
permeate the entire globe.
