| 1963 born sydney, australia. 1984 graduated sydney college of the arts, jewellery and sculpture. 1986 awarded a grant from the australian crafts council, and staged a first exhibition - featuring the lockheed lounge - at the roslyn oxley gallery in sydney. designed first of the pod series of watches. 1987 newson moved to tokyo, where he lived and worked to 1991. teruo kurosaki's company, idée, manufactured such pieces as the orgone lounge, black hole table and felt chair, which were widely exhibited in asia and europe. for idée he also created the charlotte chair and super guppy lamp. 1988 wood chair for house of fiction exhibition, sydney. designed embryo chair for powerhouse museum, sydney. designed andoni shop interior, sydney. received grant from visual arts board, australia council. marc newson exhibition, idée, tokyo. designed black hole table, tokyo. 1989 designed pod bar interior, tokyo. designed orgone fibreglass chair and lounge, sydney first exhibition, milan furniture fair. 1990 designed carbon fibre mystery clock. designed felt chair and wicker chair and lounge series, idée, tokyo 1991 newson set up a studio in paris in 1991, started to work for flos for lighting, cappellini and moroso. he formed a joint venture, the ikepod watch company, to manufacture the watches he designed, and produced limited editions of aluminium furniture including the event horizon table and orgone chair. marc newson exhibition, VIA, paris. 1992 moved to paris. designed shiseido men’s toiletries range, paris. interiors of hysterie and skoda boutiques, germany. visiting professor at the instituto europeo del design, milan, italy. visiting professor, vitra design museum summer workshop, germany. 1993 awarded ‘créateur de l’année’, salon du meuble, paris. presentation of gluon chair and TV chair and table for moroso. madonna rain video featuring the lockheed lounge. presentation of helice lamp for flos. limited edition orgone aluminium chair and lounge, paris. 1994 development of new products for alessi. designed gello table for 3 suisses. formation of Ikepod, switzerland with oliver Ike; development of seaslug watch. 1995 designed interior of coast restaurant, london. marc newson: bucky installation, fondation cartier, paris. 1996 designed hemipode watch. designed interior of syn recording studio, tokyo. designed interior of komed restaurant, cologne. 1997 newson moved to london, where he and his partner benjamin de haan set up marc newson ltd. as a larger studio capable of tackling more ambitious industrial projects. for belgian designer, walter van beirendonck's streetwear label W<, retail units, paris. marc newson exhibition, villa de noailles, france. designed dishdoctor and rock doorstop for magis. 1998 designed Io table for B&B italia. designed glassware for iittala, finland. 1999 designed falcon 900B business jet, london. designed MNO1 aluminium bicycle, biomega, denmark. marc newson, monograph, booth-clibborn editions, london. designed ford 021C concept car. 2000-2001 designed hair care products, vidal sassoon, new york. llama apartments project, brisbane, australia. designed interior of lever bar, new york design work for nike, idée-sputnik release of miniature lockheed lounge, vitra, germany in november, 2000, syn established a partnership with marc newson, to develop products for the japanese market. syn will offer a unique perspective and understanding of the products that will be required by the emerging 'digital lifestyle' of japanese and asian consumers. it will also focus on home electronics and portable wireless devices, such as phones and PDAs, as well as larger-scale projects such as interiors and vehicles.(simon le bon -duran duran- is the founder and chairman of syn). museum collections art gallery of south australia, adelaide, australia carnegie museum, pittsburgh, usa design museum, london musee des arts decoratifs, paris museum of modern art, new york powerhouse museum, sydney san francisco museum of modern art vitra design museum, weil am rhein, germany --- http://www.marc-newson.com http://www.synpro.co.jp --- |
