designer's own words:

Home is designed for homeless peoples, the public, charity organizations, and our planet. The foremost goal for this project was not to simply provide shelter and storage, but to create a home for a human being. A home is a place where you can escape the outside world, shelter yourself from the elements, as well as relax, maybe even with a pet. Home begins to approach this goal by offering the cart owner two bins; one to store personal items storage such as clothing, collectibles, and currency. The second bin can function as storage for recyclables that can be redeemed for income. The bins also offer a level of privacy, whereas shopping carts have see-through metal mesh, the injection molded bins allow personal items to remain personal. Other areas of storage are also available; a lower mesh rack, a rear mesh rack, and a strong tubular frame that external items can be tied to. The rollup nylon shelter has many storage options, two velcro straps allow the shelter pack to be mounted in several positions for each users unique preferences. The shelter consists of four flexible yet rigid pvc frame poles and one continious sheet of ripstop water-resistant nylon, and requires less time and effort to setup than most free-standing tents. The shelter conveintiently allows the user to have full-access to all of their protected belongings in the cart while inside, giving protection of personal belongings from theft during the night. The shelter cacoons the user on all sides, with a floor that connects to the wheels of the cart. The interior volume is generously sized, offering 213cm (7ft) lengthwise, 76cm (2.5ft) of width, and adequate headroom for a large male to sit upright. The design also reflects on the rising awareness of the safety of our homeless today - with two large windows for maximum visibility, while still retaining shelter from the elements and privacy. The color choice of orange is to draw attention, to make passer-byers aware a fellow human is inside. Home is designed utilizing sustainable materials that are friendly to our planet and to the limited budgets of donating charity organizations. The majority of the cart is made from extruded Treeplast®, (www.treeplast.com) a 50% wood, corn, and natural resins mix, which is then coated with waterproofing lacquer. Home was created with ease of manufacturing in mind; three extremely workable and cost-effective materials were chosen for their characteristics and consisting of only nine simple parts. Home effectively acts as storage for personal belongings, facilitates recycling to provide income, protection from the elements, allows for sustainable and affordable manufacturing, and creates an environment that the user can find comfort in and identify with as his or her own home.
